Of course I’ve been thinking a lot about my role as a parent with a Teenager about to launch. I am lucky in that I have always had a close relationship with my daughter; our bedrooms are a mere feet away from each other, yes, but it goes deeper than that. We confide in one another. We bear witness to most of the burdens we carry in our lives. We have a comfortable vernacular. We get cranky with each other. We make eye contact and know immediately what the other is feeling. We say things like “Love you!” when we leave the apartment. We are a presence in each other’s lives, and it’s not simply physical. It’s been like this the whole of our lives as Mother and Daughter. The touring of the colleges is a reminder to me that she will be moving to another city soon. And while she won’t be in the home that we’ve created on a day-to-day basis, I know that she will continue to have that presence. And that is something I can work with.
Maxine Waters: “Everyone has a part to play. We have the power. You can do it.”
Roxane Gay: “I no longer answer the question “what is feminism?” I really don’t. Because we know what feminism is at this point, and people who don’t in 2017 are people who are being willfully ignorant.”
