I had a momentary burst of The Teenager this weekend; on Saturday, she emerged from the bowels of Penn Station and arrived at our apartment. In town for our dear friends’ wedding, that night. Her chatter filled our home, familiar and loving. Dresses laid out on her bed, what to wear, what to wear. It was comforting, the whirlwind. In the wake of her going to college, I’ve had a constant stream of houseguests. I haven’t had much time to enjoy the quiet, to lay on my couch and dose off, uninterrupted. This empty nest mishegas can feel easy breezy when you’re not alone. When the space is filled with stilted small talk, luggage stashed awkwardly, guests making do with what little I can provide. I haven’t had time to wallow. I suppose that’s a blessing, the lack of introspection. It seemed most apparent on seeing her for a glimpse, it feel most palpable, by being with her for a short window. Home at 4:30 on Saturday, on a train back to Boston on Sunday at 1pm. We stood close to each other at the wedding, talking in each other’s ears, filling in the white space of our texts over the last four weeks. In the morning, after the wedding brunch, I accompanied The Teenager to Penn Station. I know. What? Yes, I went with her, there. Small signs of one’s life changes, these are. And as she left me, standing in Penn Station, the world around me, I was alone, again. I walked home, some 40 blocks, taking in the air, the noise, the still of my mind. Relishing the experience of being with her, looking forward to seeing her again. That’s the brilliance of this transition, that I have this back and forth. Coming, going, time spent in appreciation, and always as ever, together.
Jane Fonda: “Oh, poor top-paid executives who can’t get his job back…Fuck it! Sweep the floor at Starbucks until you learn! If you can’t learn, you don’t belong in the boardroom. And there are plenty of women who do belong in the boardroom.”
Jennifer Weiner: “I want to burn the frat house of America to the ground.”
Christine Ford is going to do it.
The team (a couple at that!) behind dyslexia.
And in further WTF news there’s this.
And now have a laugh with Kathleen Madigan.
