I’ve been single a long time. My definition of single is: not being in a relationship (whether open or monogamous.) The last time I had a boyfriend was 2010; I was crazy about him, I was happy, I wasn’t looking at other men (I’m straight.) In the years since the boyfriend though, I’ve been in and out of things with men. “Dating” it’s called. And for me, part of dating involves the digital platform. This includes OK Cupid, Tinder, Bumble and others. I dip in and out of all of them. Sometimes I leave one of them because I have too many “matches,” meaning I’ve swiped right on one too many fellas that have swiped right on me (swiping right means you like them, swiping left means don’t show this dummy again). Sometimes I get swipe finger, which for me is excessive swiping left. The tip of my finger will get a certain numb sensation, which I reckon is my body’s way of telling me to stop it already. (My rule of thumb in a swipe session is, if I swiped left on 100 men, it’s time to do something else). Meeting men is not the most difficult aspect of dating for me; it’s connecting with someone long enough to want to have a conversation with them. And I am ever hopeful that my bashert is out and about, waiting for me the same way I’m waiting for him.
